If we thought it couldn't get any worse after Monday's loss to the depleted Memphis Grizzlies, boy were we in for a treat in this one. The Miami Heat supporting cast have a complete no show in tonight's 116-96 loss to the Detroit Pistons. It feels hard just typing that, but somehow the Heat managed to lose to the second worst team in the league and a team that hadn't won a road game against an Eastern Conference opponent up to this point in the season.
The Miami Heat got solid games out of Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo, but no one else decided to show up for today's game. Tyler and Bam combined to shoot 21-of-33 (63.6%) while the rest of the team shot 12-of-44 (27.3%). This has been a trend all season long as the outside shooting for this team has been below average with players like Max Strus, Gabe Vincent and Duncan Robinson unable to consistently score from the outside. Strus and Vincent had their moments earlier this season, but they seem to have fallen back down to earth, which is extremely bad news for Miami as they were relying heavily on both of these players becoming regular rotation players.
The connection between Bam and Tyler is definitely there and they seem to work really well together at times, but the offense as a whole has way too many flaws and is unable to consistently put up points. More often than not the team has to settle for a contested jumper because most of the players on this team are unable to get by their initial defender and force help. Lowry has done it at times this season while Jimmy Butler has been hurt, but those heavy minutes seem to be catching up with him. His shooting over the passed six games has taken a dip in efficiency and that just won't work with this team having limited creators.
This game was just as frustrating as you can imagine, as we just had to watch our team get completely torched by Bojan Bogdanovic in the second half. He scored 28 points of his 31 in the half and did so on 11-of-13 shooting and 6-of-7 from deep. It got to a point in the 4th quarter when Bojan was just chucking up step back and jab step triples with ease over whoever decided to step in front of him. The rest of the team chipped in as well as they combined to shoot 19-of-41 from three point range. Just an incredible group effort from the outside from the Pistons, and it really makes you wonder how Miami can't find the same level of success after being so deadly last season.
After one of the biggest performances of the season against the Boston Celtics on the road, the Miami Heat have completely fallen apart and have lost two games in devastating fashion. These are two games that should have been victories for a team Jimmy Butler apparently still believes has "championship" expectations. After the performances we've seen in these last two games, they would be lucky to make it out of the play-in tournament.
Almost forgot to mention that Victor Oladipo made his much anticipated season debut in this game and honestly, does it really matter? His presence didn't make a difference one bit and just contributed to the inefficiencies of the bench at the moment. It was just his first game back, but the reality is the entire team outside of Bam and Tyler played like G-Leaguers in this game.
Next up, the Miami Heat will look to bounce back from this tragic start to the home stand as they face the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday, November 8th at 7:30 PM EST.
