How about them Dolphins?! The Miami Dolphins are now one of only six teams to start the season 2-0 after defeating the Baltimore Ravens 42-38. If you have been a fan of this franchise for as long as I've been you can say without a doubt what we just witnessed this passed Sunday has never happened to us. Outside of the fourth quarter, this game was looking a lot like what we've been used to as fans over the past two decades. An inability to move the ball down the field on offense and a defense that was struggling to get any stops. There was no reason for us to believe this would change heading into the final frame, but it did. The Dolphins are just the sixth team in NFL history to overcome a 21-point fourth quarter deficit and win in regulation!
Down 35-14 heading into the fourth quarter, head coach Mike McDaniel and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa took it upon themselves to lift this franchise out of the mediocrity we've known for years and put on an absolute show. After struggling in the first half, Tua would go on to throw five passing TD's in the second and four alone in the fourth quarter to bring his team back from an improbable deficit and outscoring the Ravens 28-3. He finished the game with a 124.1 passer rating after completing 36-of-50 passes (72.0%) to go with 469 passing yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Those are some of the best numbers any Miami Dolphins quarterback has ever put up in our franchise's history as it tied Dan Marino and Bob Griese for the most passing touchdowns in a game. His composure, anticipation and accuracy were all on display at an elite level and is the reason this team was able to pull out the victory. This is the game we will all remember as the day Tua Tagovailoa has arrived!
Now while Tua was certainly a big part of this win, his weapons were probably just as important and if it wasn't clear before that the addition of Tyreek Hill would transform this Dolphins offense than it surely is now. His speed on the outside creates so much chaos for opposing secondaries that it creates tons of space for his teammates. You combine that with one of the most skilled and atheltic young receivers in the game, Jaylen Waddle, and you have the most dynamic receiver pairing in possibly NFL history. Hill finished the game with 11 receptions (13 targets), 190 yards and two touchdowns while Waddle added 11 catches of his own (19 targets) to go with 171 yards and two touchdowns. Speed absolutely dominates in this league and we got a perfect glimpse of that against Baltimore. The Dolphins were the first team in NFL history with a player recording 400+ passing yards & five passing TD's & two teammates recording 170+ receiving yards & 2+ receiving TD's in the same game. Just eye popping stats from our Miami Dolphins and it makes next Sunday's matchup against the Buffalo Bills that much more exciting.
However, before we move on to next weeks big matchup I need to talk about the game Lamar Jackson and the Ravens put together. Jackson did just about everything he could to lead his team to a victory and had a historic day himself. Finished the game with a near perfect quarterback rating of 142.6 as he completed 21-of-29 passes (72.4%) to go with 318 passing yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. He also led his team on the ground as he added nine carries for a team high 119 rushing yards and a touchdown. He became the first player in NFL history with a 75+ yard passing TD & a 75+ yard rushing TD in the same game. It felt like there was nothing the defense could do to slow him down as he had a perfect QB rating entering the fourth quarter. As has been the theme all article though, things changed in the final frame. The Dolphins defense held Lamar and the Raven's offense to just three points and gave the Dolphins a chance to get back in this game, which they clearly took.
Now as we look towards next week it's hard not to get excited about the possibilities and what it could mean for this franchise to get a win over Buffalo Bills, who at the moment is considered the best team in the league by a wide margin. Without a doubt with the offense this Dolphins team possesses we have a chance against anyone, but we also need to temper expectations. Last years Bills team wasn't as complete as this years is and we were given a 35-0 wake up call against Buffalo in week 2 of last season. Same can be said about the Dolphins, who finally have an offense that can contend with the best of them on any given night. All that's left is the consistency.
